I did not want this book to end。 I love the way that Katherine Heiny writes。 There are so many jokes slipped into every paragraph but they aren't even jokes。 It's the way she thinks and slips in into the character's heads。 Jane， Duncan， Aggie， Jimmy， the kids， they all seem like real people。 And when Jane was happy， I was happy， too。 I did not want this book to end。 I love the way that Katherine Heiny writes。 There are so many jokes slipped into every paragraph but they aren't even jokes。 It's the way she thinks and slips in into the character's heads。 Jane， Duncan， Aggie， Jimmy， the kids， they all seem like real people。 And when Jane was happy， I was happy， too。 。。。more

A very solid and grateful 4。5。 EARLY MORNING RISER is charming and provides more than a couple of opportunities to laugh out loud。 It reminds me of the best of Anne Tyler with a working-class dash of Laurie Colwin。 Highly recommend especially if you need a good book to slide into and wallow in an amusing cast of characters。

Katherine Heiny has written a lovely little book that I enjoyed tremendously although nothing much happens。 Jane is a 2nd grade teacher and is dating Duncan who once would be called a rake， that's how many women he has bedded。 He's against marriage since his previous one was unhappy although he continues to mow his ex's lawn。 Jane is not having any of this and they soon break up。 She begins dating Luke but on the eve of their wedding tragedy strikes and their wedding is cancelled and 6 months la Katherine Heiny has written a lovely little book that I enjoyed tremendously although nothing much happens。 Jane is a 2nd grade teacher and is dating Duncan who once would be called a rake， that's how many women he has bedded。 He's against marriage since his previous one was unhappy although he continues to mow his ex's lawn。 Jane is not having any of this and they soon break up。 She begins dating Luke but on the eve of their wedding tragedy strikes and their wedding is cancelled and 6 months later cancelled again。 Luke leaves。 One day Jane bumps into Duncan and they begin dating again。 This make me very happy because I adore Duncan。 The tragedy involves Jimmy a slightly retarded young man whom everyone begins to take care of until they see they cannot watch him all the time unless he lives with them。 Katherine Heiny is VERY funny。 Lots of LOL。 Her description of Jane's younger daughter is priceless。 And that's all I can say about this enjoyable novel。 Recommended。 。。。more

I bought into the review hype and so I only have myself to blame。 This was the most dull book about small life living people。 If the characters were developed and felt like they had any depth， maybe it could be something worth reading。 If the story included the big， messy bits instead of skipping ahead so the character could say “well that happened”， then it would begin to feel interesting。 If the story was not set up in such simple， obvious ways， perhaps I would not think it was so lazy。 The dr I bought into the review hype and so I only have myself to blame。 This was the most dull book about small life living people。 If the characters were developed and felt like they had any depth， maybe it could be something worth reading。 If the story included the big， messy bits instead of skipping ahead so the character could say “well that happened”， then it would begin to feel interesting。 If the story was not set up in such simple， obvious ways， perhaps I would not think it was so lazy。 The drama was entirely removed from any of the “plot” points。 This is milquetoast。 I know we are all fried and exhausted and experiencing stress in these pandemic times， but seriously。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book- my first by Katherine Heiny。 I will definitely be reading her previous novel， Standard Deviation。 Early Morning Riser is a story of everyday life with a cast of quirky， oddball， and lovable characters。 Heiny's writing is smart， funny， and pulls you into the lives of her characters in Boyne City。 The dialogue is fantastic！ I think I was the first to read it from my local library （yeah， I just love a brand new book）， and it's one of those that I read in practically one I really enjoyed this book- my first by Katherine Heiny。 I will definitely be reading her previous novel， Standard Deviation。 Early Morning Riser is a story of everyday life with a cast of quirky， oddball， and lovable characters。 Heiny's writing is smart， funny， and pulls you into the lives of her characters in Boyne City。 The dialogue is fantastic！ I think I was the first to read it from my local library （yeah， I just love a brand new book）， and it's one of those that I read in practically one sitting because it's just so good， but also so I can return it to the library as soon as possible for others to enjoy。 I have no doubt there will be a long hold list for this book。 。。。more

Beautiful story， very well written。 I wanted the story to keep going when it ended， which is always a good sign。*I received a free Kindle copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review， but I also had pre-ordered an Audible copy which I listened to as soon as it came out this week。 Annie B Jones at Bookshelf Thomasville had recommended it highly， so I had made the pre-order。 It was definitely worth an Audible credit。

Early Morning Riser takes place in a small town in Northern Michigan， where everyone knows one another （and their business）。 In some ways its mood reminds me a bit of the small town Maine feel that Elizabeth Strout highlights in her novels。 The main character is Jane， an elementary school teacher that moves to down and falls into a relationship with Duncan， a charming older man who apparently had dated pretty much everyone woman in the area。 She sees a future with Duncan， while Duncan sees this Early Morning Riser takes place in a small town in Northern Michigan， where everyone knows one another （and their business）。 In some ways its mood reminds me a bit of the small town Maine feel that Elizabeth Strout highlights in her novels。 The main character is Jane， an elementary school teacher that moves to down and falls into a relationship with Duncan， a charming older man who apparently had dated pretty much everyone woman in the area。 She sees a future with Duncan， while Duncan sees this relationship as just a fling as he does not want to get married again， and Jane is young and he figures she will find someone else to marry。 About a quarter of the way into the book， a car accident happens which serves as the catalyst for much of the rest of the book。 I appreciated the small town feel that Heiny highlights in this book and enjoyed many of the characters within the book。 As I finished the book， I was still unsure of how I felt about how she developed the characters of Gary and Jimmy， both with different sorts of cognitive or developmental delays （Gary sort of appears perhaps to be on the spectrum）。 I felt like Jimmy in particular was used primarily as a plot device and did not shine enough on his own。 And I never really got the allure of Duncan。 Throughout the book people complain about his inability to get his work done in time， and it is couched as "aww schucks-y"， when I do no understand how anyone would still ask him to repair/refinish any furniture with his work ethic。 。。。more

A humorous and heartwarming book about life and love in a small community。 Second grade teacher Jane falls in love with Duncan， but it soon becomes obvious that Duncan is not so great on commitment。 Filled with a lot of memorable characters， Early Morning Riser is a good distraction from this pandemic。
